Our cotton throws are a cotton-blend of 50% cotton, 30% polyester and 20% acrylic, woven in our family's mill in Ukraine. They are not 100% cotton, and we would rather say so up front. What you get is a soft, easy-care throw that you can hand wash at 30 °C, from £21.90 to £32.90, with free UK delivery from our Coventry warehouse.

Each cotton blanket measures 140 × 200 cm including 10 cm fringes and weighs 940 g. On our own five-point scale it scores 4 for softness and 3 for warmth: comfortable on the sofa for most of the year, while wool is the warmer choice for a cold winter.

What the blend means in practice

  • Cotton gives the throw its soft, familiar feel.
  • Polyester is a strong fibre that helps the throw keep its shape.
  • Acrylic adds softness and a little warmth for its weight.
  • Care: the label allows a hand wash at 30 °C, which our wool throws do not.

Compared with our wool throws, the cotton-blend costs less, can be washed at home and is softer than our pure new wool (4/5 against 3/5). It is less warm, though: 3/5, against 4/5 for merino and 5/5 for pure new wool.

For pets, children and the family sofa

The patterns are meant to be fun: dogs, cats, butterflies, chevron, squares, striped squares and diamond. A throw you can wash is the practical choice for a sofa shared with a dog or a cat. Fold it over the seat, and when it has collected hair or muddy paw prints, wash it by hand. Like any woven throw, it can catch on sharp claws.

With children, use it on the family sofa, for building dens or on a child's bed. Please don't use it, or any loose throw, in a baby's cot.

How to wash a cotton-blend throw

  1. Soak it for 10 to 15 minutes in water at 30 °C with a detergent without bleach.
  2. Move it gently by hand for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse several times in water of the same temperature.
  3. Don't wring or twist it: let the water drain away, then hang it up to dry out of direct sun.

Want more warmth for winter? Our merino throws start at £49.90, and our guide merino vs cashmere vs pure wool compares every material we use, cotton-blend included.

Frequently asked

Are your cotton throws 100% cotton?

No. They are a cotton-blend of 50% cotton, 30% polyester and 20% acrylic, soft to the touch and hand-washable at 30 °C.

Can you put a cotton throw in the washing machine?

The care label on ours says hand wash at 30 °C, so that is what we recommend. Soak it, move it gently, rinse, and hang it to dry out of direct sun without wringing.

Is a cotton throw good for dogs?

It is a practical choice for a sofa shared with a dog, because you can wash it by hand at 30 °C when it collects hair or muddy paw prints. Like any woven throw, it can catch on sharp claws.

Is a cotton throw warm enough for winter?

It scores 3/5 for warmth on our own scale, so it is made for milder evenings. For winter, our merino throws (4/5) and pure new wool throws (5/5) are warmer.

What size is a cotton throw?

Ours are 140 × 200 cm including 10 cm fringes and weigh 940 g: enough for two on the sofa, or a top layer on a single bed.
