Our merino throws are woven from 80% merino wool and 20% nylon in our family's mill in Ukraine. They come in three sizes, 130 × 170, 140 × 200 and 150 × 215 cm, in about 30 colourways, and cost £49.90 to £69.90. Every merino wool blanket ships free across the UK from our Coventry warehouse.

Merino is a fine wool, so it feels soft on the skin, and like all wool it takes up moisture without feeling damp and hardly holds on to smells. On our own five-point scale the merino throws score 4 for softness and 4 for warmth: the all-rounder of our range.

Why 20% nylon?

Nylon, also called polyamide, is a strong, hard-wearing fibre. Woven in with the merino, it makes the fabric stronger, so the throw copes better with everyday use on the sofa, and it helps the throw keep its shape through years of folding, tugging and airing. It is the same reason merino socks usually contain some nylon.

What the nylon does not add is warmth or softness: those come from the 80% merino wool. That is why we call these merino throws, not pure merino, and why the composition is the first thing we tell you.

The fringed 140 × 200 cm throws come in chevron, corner chevron, diamonds, squares, stripes, gradient squares and a Christmas design. The double-sided throws are denser and heavier for their size, so choose one of those if you like a throw with some weight to it.

Care: air it, or have it dry cleaned

The care label says do not wash. To freshen a merino throw, hang it outdoors for a few hours, out of direct sun and rain; to clean it, have it dry cleaned (P on the label). Some owners wash wool at home on a gentle wool programme. Our guide on how to wash a wool blanket explains how to do that carefully, but it is at your own risk.

Want something softer? The cashmere-merino throws (90% merino wool, 10% cashmere) score 5/5 for softness. Want more warmth? Our pure new wool throws score 5/5 for warmth, though they are coarser to the touch.

Frequently asked

Why is there nylon in a merino wool blanket?

The 20% nylon (polyamide) makes the fabric stronger and helps the throw keep its shape through years of use. It adds strength, not warmth: the warmth comes from the 80% merino wool.

Is merino wool itchy?

Merino is a fine wool: its fibres bend when they touch the skin instead of prickling, so it feels far softer than coarse wool. Our merino throws score 4/5 for softness on our own scale, and the cashmere-merino blend (90% merino wool, 10% cashmere) scores 5/5. Our article Is merino wool itchy? explains why.

Are merino blankets warm?

Yes: our merino throws score 4/5 for warmth on our own scale, and the double-sided 130 × 170 cm and 150 × 215 cm sizes are the densest. If warmth matters most, our pure new wool throws score 5/5.

What size merino throw for a double bed?

The 150 × 215 cm merino throw covers the top of a standard 135 × 190 cm double mattress. To lay a throw across the foot of the bed instead, 130 × 170 or 140 × 200 cm is enough.

How do you clean a merino wool throw?

The label says do not wash: air it outdoors for a few hours, out of direct sun and rain, or have it dry cleaned. Our wool washing guide explains the careful home wash some owners choose, at their own risk.
