Our silk sleep mask is made of 100% silk with a weight of 22 momme. It measures about 10 × 20 cm, comes with earplugs and costs £17.90, with free UK delivery from our Coventry warehouse.
The mask covers your eyes and blocks light, and the silk feels smooth and light on your face. Use it on a plane or a train, for an afternoon nap, when you sleep after a night shift, or on summer mornings when the sun is up long before you are. The earplugs come in handy in the same places, and at about 10 × 20 cm the mask is small enough for a handbag or a washbag.
What does 22 momme mean?
Silk is a protein fibre spun by the silkworm, and woven closely it makes a fine, smooth fabric with a soft sheen. Momme (written mm) is the traditional unit for the weight of that fabric: silk is described by its momme the way cotton bedding is described by its thread count. The higher the number, the more silk goes into each square metre: 22 momme is roughly 95 g of silk per square metre. More silk makes a denser, heavier fabric that lets less light through and usually lasts longer than a lighter one. Lighter silks of 16 or 19 momme are common too; 22 momme gives the mask a fuller, more substantial feel.
Where our silk masks are made
Our throws are woven in our own mill in Ukraine, but the silk masks are not: they are made in China, and we sell them alongside our throws.
How to care for silk
Always check the care label first. In general, silk likes a gentle hand wash in cool or lukewarm water with a mild detergent made for silk or delicates.
- Don't rub, wring or twist it; press the water out in a clean towel.
- Let it dry flat or hanging, away from direct sun and radiators.
- Keep it out of the tumble dryer and away from bleach.
- If it needs ironing, use a low heat (the silk setting) on the reverse side.
