Christmas throws: our reindeer merino throw and other festive wool picks

A Christmas throw should look festive in December and still earn its place on the sofa in February. Our reindeer throw is woven in 80% merino wool in red, blue or grey; a few plain throws in deep winter colours do the same job more quietly.

Christmas throws: our reindeer merino throw and other festive wool picks

If you want a throw that says Christmas, our reindeer throw is the one: a 140 × 200 cm merino throw (80% merino wool, 20% nylon, 730 g) with reindeer and Nordic motifs, in red–white, blue–white or grey–white, at £52.90. If you would rather have something that feels festive without a pattern, choose a burgundy lambswool throw (£55.90) or an olive green cashmere-merino throw (90% merino, 10% cashmere, £89.90).

All of them are woven in our own mill in Ukraine, all are 140 × 200 cm including the fringes, and all ship free across the UK from our warehouse in Coventry. Below you'll find how they compare, which one suits which room and person, and how to look after a wool throw once the tree has gone.

Our Christmas throws at a glance

You'll find all of them in our throws; the reindeer design sits with the merino throws.

The reindeer throw: what you get

The reindeer throw is part of our 140 × 200 cm merino range. The yarn is 80% merino wool and 20% nylon: the merino brings the softness and warmth, the nylon adds strength and stability to the yarn. On our own scale it rates 4 out of 5 for softness and 4 out of 5 for warmth.

The pattern is a woven band of reindeer and small Nordic motifs on a cream ground, framed in red, blue or grey. The design is woven into the cloth rather than printed on top. The fringed ends make it look finished draped over the back of a sofa or folded at the foot of a bed.

Which colour? Red–white is the classic Christmas look and sits well in a room with warm woods or cream walls. Blue–white feels cooler and more Scandinavian, good with grey or white sofas. Grey–white is the quietest of the three and the easiest to leave out all winter.

Festive without a pattern

Not everyone wants reindeer in January. Deep, warm colours read as festive in December and simply as cosy for the rest of the winter:

  • Burgundy lambswool: 100% New Zealand lambswool in a herringbone weave. Lambswool comes from the first shearing of young sheep.
  • Olive green cashmere-merino: 90% merino wool and 10% cashmere, herringbone with white. It is the softest throw in our range (5 out of 5 on our scale) and the one to choose for someone who finds wool scratchy.

Not sure which fibre suits you? Our comparison of merino, lambswool and cashmere goes through warmth, softness and care in more detail.

Which size works for a Christmas throw?

140 × 200 cm is the size most people mean by a throw. It covers one person on the sofa from shoulders to feet, drapes neatly over a two- or three-seater, and folds at the foot of a double bed with room to spare. If you want to wrap up fully or share it on the sofa, our 150 × 215 cm merino throws are larger, though they come in two-tone, double-sided colourways rather than the reindeer design. Our throw size guide has the measurements for sofas and beds.

Giving a throw as a Christmas present

A throw is one of the few presents that gets used every evening. A few practical points:

  • Wrapping: roll the throw rather than folding it, tie it with a wide ribbon or a strip of brown paper and tuck a gift tag under the knot. Rolled, it looks like a present instead of a parcel.
  • Delivery: UK delivery is free from our Coventry warehouse, and each product page shows the expected delivery dates. From mid-November the product pages also show the last day to order for delivery before Christmas.
  • Returns: we give 30 days to return a throw, on top of the 14-day statutory right to cancel. The return postage is paid by the customer unless the item arrived wrong or damaged. Details are on our returns page.
  • Black Friday: from 27 to 30 November, items that aren't already reduced are 15% off, with no code needed.

For more gift ideas by budget, see gifts for someone who's always cold, and if the present is for a parent or grandparent, keeping an older parent warm.

Looking after a wool throw after Christmas

The labels on our wool, merino and cashmere-merino throws say do not wash. Wool needs less cleaning than you might expect: hang the throw outdoors for a few hours, out of direct sun and rain, and it airs itself fresh. If it does get a stain, have it dry cleaned (solvent P). Blot spills straight away with a dry cloth rather than rubbing them in.

Before you put a Christmas throw away for the year, air it, make sure it is completely dry and store it folded in a breathable cotton bag or a box, not in plastic. Clothes moths go for wool that is stored dirty and left undisturbed, so storing it clean and checking it now and then helps keep them away.

Questions about Christmas throws

Is a wool Christmas throw only for December?

No. A wool throw is useful from October to April. The grey–white reindeer throw and the plain burgundy or olive throws are the easiest to keep out after Christmas.

Will the reindeer throw feel scratchy?

Our merino throws rate 4 out of 5 for softness on our own scale. If someone is very sensitive to wool, the cashmere-merino throw is the softer choice; our article on whether merino wool is itchy explains why.

What size is the reindeer throw?

140 × 200 cm including the fringes, and it weighs 730 g, so it is light enough to move between the sofa and the bed.

Can I wash it after the holidays?

The label says do not wash. Air it outdoors for a few hours, or have it dry cleaned if it is stained.

When do I need to order for delivery before Christmas?

From mid-November each product page shows the last day to order for delivery before Christmas. UK orders ship from our warehouse in Coventry.
